Ozan Azerbaijani Rock Band: 'Musicians should be a good example'

By Nune Aylanjyan, GIPA student
08.03.2010

“It’s my life,” sings Bon Jovi. "I’m sure everybody knows this song and everytime listening to it we feel undescribable freedom and just wanna cry. Yes, it’s my life and I can do whatever I want,” says Nurlan Kerimov, the vocalist and guitarist from Azerbaijani rock band OZAN.

I don’t know what Nurlan Kerimov was thinking about when he was at Bon Jovi’s concert but everything began from it. “Actually I’ve been listening to rock music since my childhood, when I was just 5, but one day my dad took me to Bon Jovi’s concert in Moscow and it was fatal for me,” tells a founder of an Azerbaijanian rock band Ozan. In 2000 Nurlan began to practice as a bass guitarist in Ferrum band, but in some months he gave up.

“I wanted to have my own band and my special style, I call it ethno rock,” tells Nurlan. Ozan is a 3-year old band, the guys sing mostly in their mother language, Azerbaijanian, they also make covers: The Beatles, Coldplay, Oazis, Metallica, Doors.

“We already have material almost for 3 albums, but it’s very difficult to have an album, rock is not so popular in Azerbaijan, though our music has its audience. Everytime we have a concert we gather almost 200 people,” says Nurlan.

Once or twice a week Ozan has gigs at clubs or pubs, the tickets cost 12.5 $. Besides such kind of events the band has taken part in the Caucasus Rock Fest in Tbilisi, in June 2009. By the way, Armenian rock band Bambir also was there.

"In Tbilisi, organizers of that festival told us Bambir and Ozan were the best bands of the festival. But your guys are really good,” says Nurlan who liked The Bambir really very much. The guys from Ozan sing about everything: social problems, love, childhood, fears, about everything close to real life.

Also the band support progressive youth in Azerbaijan. "We wrote an anthem for "Dalgha" youth movement in Azerbaijan, we want to change some things in Azerbaijan, for instance, social problems, like early marriges in the regions. The next generation should be better than mine. And it’s our role in society, to try do things better," says Nurlan.

Nurlan is sure that music and art are powerful things and don’t accept any borders and if they have any invitation from Armenian rock bands to have a concert together they will think.

"Well, we still have war with Armenia, still have unsolved problems, but we are musicians and we should be a good example. If there is any offer from Armenian band, we will think".

OZAN Rock Band Members:

Nurlan Kerimov - Vocal, guitar

Anar Aliyev – Guitars, vocals

Rafael Kasimov – Bass guitar
