Independent TV Downbeat On Renewed Broadcasts [18/07/2010]

The National Commission on Television and Radio (HRAH) will formally announce on Tuesday the start of tenders for virtually all broadcasting frequencies available in the country. The Armenian authorities controversially suspended the supposedly competitive licensing process two years ago, citing the need to expedite the country’s transition to mandatory broadcasting by 2013.

RA Ombudsman: 'The situation is most concerning' [08/07/2010]

"The situation of freedom of speech is most concerning in Armenia," RA Ombudsman noted in his 10th ad hoc report. Harassment of journalists is politically motivated, with cases of violence against journalists increasing during elections. Journalists are chased for their professional activities, their rights and freedom to information are restricted. On the other hand, they are pressurized by publishing companies, which, in some cases, take away the copies of newspapers from newsstands.

While we welcome the fact that some changes were made to the legislation in line with the RFOM’s recommendations, we note that a number of concerns and recommendations remain unanswered. For example, we note with concern that the amendments to the law will actually reduce the number of TV media able to broadcast in Armenia for some years, thereby restricting media pluralism.

Court Sentenced Malkhaz Gulashvili and His Son to Two-Month Pre-Trial Detention [12/06/2010]

On June 10 Tbilisi City Court sentenced Malkhaz Gulashvili, Director, the Georgian Times media holding and the founder of the People's Orthodox Movemenand and his minor son David Gulashvili to a two-year pre-trial detention, in their absence, for illegally crossing the border. Through the decision the court met the request by chief Prosecutor of Georgia on a prison sentence for Malkhaz and David Gulashvili.

Watchdog Slams Armenia Over ‘Impunity’ In Human Rights Violations [31/05/2010]

The London-based human rights group Amnesty International has criticized the state of human rights protection in Armenia, noting persisting “impunity for perpetrators of human rights violations.” In its annual “State Of The World’s Human Rights” report released on Thursday, Amnesty also condemned the restriction of freedom of expression and attacks on journalists in Armenia, as well as “the ban on holding demonstrations in the center of the capital, Yerevan”, which it said has remained in place since being introduced during the state of emergency in March 2008.
