Georgia: Parliamentary Chairperson Joins Memorandum on Transformation of GPB Channel Two

On February 23 Parliamentary Chairperson David Bakradze and GPB Director General Gia Chanturia publicly signed the memorandum on the transformation of the GPB Channel Two. The memorandum was concluded on February 22 between political parties. Ahead of signing the memorandum Gia Chanturia and Luis Navaro, Director NDI Tbilisi office held a joint press conference to discuss the importance of the memorandum. David Bakradze, having weighed up the memorandum to a historical event, said Channel Tow is going to perform its function and inform the society of the activities by political parties. "The decision is conducive to the democratic development of the country," said Bakradze and pointed out that trough signing to the memorandum the participation of the Parliament in the project has been authorized. Parliamentary Chairperson thanked the NDI Director for the mediation in the course of talks. NDI Director on his side showed his consent with the outcome. According to Navaro the political channel will enable the citizens of Georgia to get better aware of the standpoints of the political parties and consequently make a favorable choice. Luis Navaro pointed out that the re-organized channel will be conducive to the development of political media in the country. According to the GPB Director it's a very useful project for political parties. "I am happy about reaching agreement at a fast pace. The channel will be subject to constant updates," Gia Chanturia said. The memorandum on the transformation of Channel Two into a political Channel was joined by 11 political parties. The memorandum is made up of several paragraphs. In particular Channel Two provides live coverage of the parliamentary plenary sessions and important committee discussions and the allocation of live air time for the opposition parties on a daily basis "without editorial interference." According to the final version of the memorandum opposition parties shall be apportioned a free hour for debates on a daily basis, the apportioned time will be distributed among the parties in row. The memorandum was rejected by two political subjects such as Guguli Magradze's Women's Party and Democratic Movement - United Georgia headed by former parliamentary chairperson Nino Burjanadze.
