IWPR Armenia: Reporting on the Problem of Drinking Water of Villages Located on Armenian-Turkish Border

19.02.2010

Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR) Armenia Branch will give a group of journalists the opportunity to provide multilateral reporting on the problem of drinking water of several villages located on Armenian-Turkish border on 2-3 March, 2010. In Bagaran, a village of Armavir region, situated 80 kilometers away from Yerevan and 1 km from Turkey, there is no pipe for drinking water, villagers say. 600 residents of the village rely on a source which comes out of the ground. The water trickles into a brook and people take it with buckets. The water is not filtered and villagers claim that its quality doesn’t comply with drinking water standards. The same is with villages of Yervandashat and Koghbavan, located near Bagaran. Residents of these villages have been living by drawing buckets of water for decades. Most desperate ones, taking into account the above mentioned and other difficult conditions are leaving the border villages. IWPR will initiate the visit of 8 journalists to the above-mentioned villages; organize meetings with officials responsible for the problems in villages, their mayors and respective officials from regional administration. The journalists will also be given the chance to speak with residents and will have free time for reporting on the issues they are interested in. There will be organized meetings with officials in Yerevan as well so that to provide multilateral reporting on the issues which are crucial for the village residents. The aim of the visit is to provide fair reporting on the most important problems of residents of border villages. The journalists participated in the visit are to prepare articles, reportages and journalistic materials for their own media. The participants will be selected through competition. For participation those interested must send the following documents: 1. Curriculum Vitae /CV/ 2. Interest form Preference will be given to radio journalists. The application deadline is February 24. For more information, please see attached file.
