Armenia: Attacks on the Press 2009

The nation remained polarized by the fraud-marred 2008 presidential election won by Serzh Sargsyan, with large public protests and violent government reprisals continuing well into 2009. The global economic crisis caused layoffs in the mining industry and a decline in remittances from Russia, heightening public frustrations. The government sought to suppress critical debate over these issues, and journalists faced intolerance, hostility, and violence.

Nikol Pashinyan had nothing to do with it [08/03/2010]

Nikol Pashinyan's advocates have been presenting the 78-page appeal for two hours at the Appeals Court. The advocates don't deny the fact that mass disturbances did take place in Yerevan on March 1, 2008, but they substantiate that Nikol Pashinyan had nothing to do with them.

Eynulla Fatullayev Says Colonel of MNS Akif Chovdarov Killed Journalist Elmar Huseynov [08/03/2010]

BAKU. March 3, 2010: Accused journalist Eynulla Fatullayev appealed to the Baku Appellate Court against the Garadagh Court’s decision to prolong the investigation against him for additional two months to include the new accusation of illegal drug possession. A copy of the appeal was sent to Turan agency.

TBC TV Studio Makes Apology for Question to Jiji Rejini [08/03/2010]

TBC TV Studio has made an apology for the question posed to Jiji Rejini in the course of the Imedi TV program Time of Truth. The anchor's question was related to the photographer's ethnic origin: "Have you ever felt ashamed of your Armenian origin?" The question was irritating for the Armenians residing in Georgia. Therefore the authors of the program made an apology on the next day off of the show.

Advocates Motion for Judge’s Resignation [03/03/2010]

The RA Appellate Court today hears the appeal of Nikol Pashinyan's advocates against a verdict of a Yerevan court. The advocates demand that the court annul the verdict of General Jurisdiction Court of Yerevan's Kentron and Nork-Marash Districts sentencing chief editor of Haykakan Zhamanak Daily Nikol Pashinyan to seven years' imprisonment.

Today marks the fifth anniversary of the unsolved murder of Monitor editor-in-chief Elmar Huseynov, who was fatally gunned down in his apartment building in a well-organised attack. ARTICLE 19 calls on the Azerbaijani government to redouble its efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice, and to take immediate action to improve freedom of expression in Azerbaijan.
