Monitoring of Coverage of Armenian-Turkish Relations in Armenian Media being Conducted
Journalists’ Team for Sustainable Future NGO has been conducting a research project since July of this year. The project’s purpose is to assess the accuracy and bias in Armenian print and electronic media when covering Armenian-Turkish relations. Throughout the research the organization will study articles of three print and two electronic Armenian media newspapers regarding Armenian-Turkish relations in 700 issues published between 2006-2009 in April and September. The organization will also organize focus groups, participants being media and NGO representatives, as well as policymakers, aiming to gain a perspective regarding the level of accuracy and bias in news coverage regarding Turkey in Armenia. The proposed research will be conducted within the framework of the Eurasia Partnership Foundation program “Reducing Media Bias in Armenia and Turkey” and is supported by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The same research is also being conducted in Turkey and is headed by the Global Political Trends Center (GPoT), the partner of Eurasia Partnership Foundation. The study will help to increase awareness among the media-related stakeholders in the level of bias and accuracy in mass-media reporting in Armenia and Turkey about bilateral issues, as well as make it possible to inform the general public of both countries about mutual media bias through media outlets. Following the completion of the study, EPF and GPoT will organize presentations on the research findings in both Armenia and Turkey for representatives of a broader group of media professionals, as well as government and non-governmental representatives with an interest in media issues.
