Georgia has fallen 18 places in the World Press Freedom Index 2010 published by the Reporters Without Borders on October 20.Georgia ranks 99th with 27 points out the total of 178 countries on the rating list. Last year Georgia ranked 81st with 18,83 points and 120th in 2007.According to the new rating Georgia and the United States of America share 99-100th places with 27 points. In the same rating Georgia is followed by Armenia with 27,5 points.In the post soviet space Georgia ranks as 5th according to the Press Freedom Index. Russia ranks 8th out of all 15 post Soviet states, preceded by the Ukraine with a steady deterioration in press freedom. Russia is followed by Azerbaijan, Belarus, and other former Soviet countries.Baltic countries have the best ranking from among the post Soviet countries. Estonia which ranks 9th is leading the list of former Soviet countries in terms of press freedom.In 2009 Georgia ranked 4th among the post Soviet countries.Northern Europe is still at the top of the list. Several countries share first place in the index again. This year it is Finland, Iceland, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland. They have all previously held this honour since the index was created in 2002. Recently professor of the American Poynter Institute, journalist Regina McCombs has been in Yerevan by the invitation of the U.S. Embassy in Armenia. She delivered a lecture on  New Media and Information Technologies for journalists, bloggers and students.“I am here to represent the developments of new media environment and the ways we can use them. I would like also to know how new media is applied in Armenia,’’ says  McCombs.For 11 years McCombs has been the senior producer of the StarTribune.com multimedia. Her stories represented through multimedia have won “Photo of the Year”, “The Best in Photojournalism” and “Emmy” international awards. Now McCombs is teaching future journalists of the Poynter Institute courses regarding the use of Multimedia, Social Networks and Mobility Aids in the sphere of journalism.During her Yerevan meetings the American journalist showed photo stories widely used in the US web newspapers accompanied by audio slideshows, videos combined with photos and reports which are shot with a phone camera.
